Flexenclosure winner of prestigious international mobile award

The 2008 GSMA Mobile Innovation Global Awards, sponsored by Ericsson, has today, 12th of February 2008, named the Swedish clean-tech company Flexenclosure as the winner in the category of Most Innovative Carrier Infrastructure for the 2008 Mobile Innovation Global Awards.

Flexenclosure won on behalf of their new and innovative base station solution for mobile networks, E-site. E-site runs mainly on renewable power sources like sun and wind and shifts input among the various power sources in an optimal manner depending on weather and climate factors via an integrated intelligent control and monitoring system. E-site is the first of its kind on the market.

Traditional base stations use a lot of power (power grid and diesel generators) and typically 50% of the stations’ operating expenses are energy costs. In rural areas in emerging markets in Africa and Asia many base stations are powered with diesel. Since E-site mainly uses renewable power sources it may reduce the fuel costs for a base station by up to 80%. This, and other related savings will allow the operators to reduce their operating costs with minimum 50%.

Flexenclosure’s E-site is especially suited for base stations in rural areas in developing countries, with fast-growing cellular telecom markets but often without adequate road and power infrastructure, frequent power cuts, rising energy costs etc. It is estimated that there will be at least 40,000 base stations built in Africa without adequate power sourcing in the next few years. The availability of sun and wind in Africa makes the continent especially suitable for base stations that to a large degree are run on renewable power sources.

“We are extremely proud of this recognition for our work. The jury clearly saw not only the technological innovation but the also the financial and environmental value E-site brings to operators. E-site will make it much easier and cheaper for African and other telecom operators to roll out and run new base stations and networks in the long run. Break-even for operators is reached after 15-18 months.”
Stefan Jern, CEO, Flexenclosure.

“E-site gives operators the ability to drastically reduce the use of diesel. But it is also a tool to reverse the industries negative climate impact. A “business as usual” scenario shows that all the diesel driven BTS’s that will be built between now and 2011 will totally emit five times the amount of carbon dioxide annually what the cars in city of London emits. E-site gives operators the opportunity to be part of the global climate change solution.”
